I want to buy a pistol in the next couple of months. I want a good concealed weapon, nock down power, and safety. I have been in the military for 3 years and know how to handle, clean, take apart, and not kill my self with one. what i dont know is which brand to buy. I wanted a springfield XD but friends say no its made in brazil, no its plastic yadda yadda. He tells me to get a glock. I like the glock 23. In your minds, whats a good concealed, heavy hitting, selfdenfense pistol? Any help would be great. Thanks ;)

glocks are plastic too...and I have both a glock in 9mm and an xd in 40 s&w and if you want something self defence and nock down power i'd at least get a 40. I use a sig sauer 45 for my canceal weapon of choice or sometimes I use my taurus 40 s&w. it's all up to you really glocks are nice but so are xd's, I personally shot my xd more than my glock, I let my girlfriend play with that more.

Bound's hubby here:

Both the Springfield XD and Glock have synthetic frames ... bad marks for me.

Personally, if I were buying a handgun for self-defense, and I wanted reliability, knock-down power, and safety ... and I wanted a semi-auto, I would get a Springfield Armory Champion 4" barreled .45 (or an older Colt Commander or Combat Commander in .45).

The M1911 styled pistols can be carried safely in Condition 1 (Co*cked and locked on a loaded round). The grip safety is very reliable, as is the thumb safety. Trigger pull is consistent.

Back in the 1960s, Chief Justice Burger answered the door one late night to a reporter's dismay, with the largest, shiniest revolver the reporter had ever seen. The Chief Justice's opinion was the sight of that pistol would change the mind of anyone with illegal intentions. Using that philosophy, the sight of a M1911 .45 can also have the same effect based upon it's reputation!

Good luck!

I like the full size Glock model 22 in .40 S&W caliber, and I recommend it highly. The model 23 is the same thing with a 1/4" cut off the butt ,and the barrel and slide shortened. The Glock is one fantasic gun.It is super safe. The only way to get the gun to discharge is to pull the trigger all the way rearwards. The gun can be completely disassembled with a small 3/32" punch. It is easy to maintain, and it is economical and supre durable. Glock have been known to have cycled over 100,000 rounds and still be in serviceable condition. You can get the Glock 22.or 23 in some sporting goods store for under $500.

If you are looking for a good concealed weapon,The Glock 23 idea is pretty good. For a concealed pistol go with a Kel-Tec 380. Its a 9MM short.Or if you're like me, i like revolvers so it really sepends what you are into.

Wait a sec, you friend tells you you shouldn't get an XD because it's plastic then tells you to get a Glock? Something ain't right here.

Either one is an excellent choice if that's what you prefer. I like 1911s & revolvers, but to each his own.
