A dual layer DVD- it has two layers of information, and this sometimes causes a slight pause during play as the laser re- focuses. i think a DVD9 has only 1 layer, and therefore only holds half the information.

a standard dvd holds 4.7 gb of data, a dl (dual layer) dvd holds 8.5 gb of data.
