The same reason a human yawns

A dog’s yawn is more stress related. It can either be a stress response to excitement – like a dog may yawn before going into an agility competition. Or a dog may yawn when it’s stressed in a negative way. It’s a signal that they’re not entirely comfortable - like at the vet’s office. But dogs are like humans, if you’re yawning, they’ll yawn back.

They yawn for 3 reasons. One is the same reason we do, to refresh the amount of oxygen in the blood to wake up. Two, because they are nervous in a situation so refreshing the oxygen in preparation for the fight or flight reflex. Three is a fake yawn to express disinterest in a situation or to prove that the arent threatened and feel confident. The last 2 have specific body language to accompany the yawn, and if i could find my animal behaviour study book, i could tell you what they are but i think my kids have pinched it :-)

Dogs often yawn when they are placed in stressful situations. It is often used as a calming signal to defuse a situation, such as if another dogs is barking or trying to attack.
As humans, we can use this when dealing with unsure or aggressive dogs, if you actually yawn at them, it is very calming (I don't recomend yawning very closely to an aggressive dog, or counting on that it will work!!)

Yawning- how many times has your dog yawned at the vet or when you've yelled at him ? Dogs yawn to calm themselves or you or another dog and to communicate no harm.

The same reason as we do, when we're tired out body doesn't utilise the oxygen as well so we yawn taking in more air.
