My recommendation would be to only give medication if the child seems cleary bothered by their symptoms or is having trouble sleeping due to coughing or a stuffy nose. Otherwise, its just a cold and they will be fine.

If they have a dry, persistant cough, get a cough syrup with a cough suppressant. If they have a cough due to congestion, get one that also has an expectorant to help the cough clear out their lungs better and a decongestant to help clear up the mucus. If they have a sore throat, acetametaphin is usually the best.

A cold typically does not come with a fever, that's usually a sign of infection. A fever is the body's way of destroying the infection, so again, only give acetametaphin if your child is very bothered by the fever. Its typically best to let his or her body take care of itself IMHO.

It depends on the child's age, but I think for medication, a decongestant is important and a fever reducer (like Motrin or Tylenol) if a fever is present. Also, remember to hydrate your child (lots of fluids) and allow them to sleep as much as needed. A cold is a virus and the only thing that will make it go away is time. You can make your child more comfortable with a decongestant and a pain reliever.

Good luck!

Love -

Actually sudafed makes some nice products now to plug in to the room - and use in the shower (or the J&J bath gel and rub is nice).

You can try the otc cold remedys for a cough
I always found children's sudafed to be the only thing that worked alright.
If the cold lasts longer then 10 days or has a fever call your MD.

It really is not a good idea to give kids cold medicine. Simply using a little ocean spray up their nose will make it run and clear up, and running a cool mist humidifier in their room at night.

What age?

Rest, lots of fluids, and time.
