I guess I should add, we have a beautiful little 5 month old chihuahua who just so happens to have the sharpest claws around. Everyone in the house is basically getting mauled by our little brute. :)

I should also add that our puppy's claws are solid black, from what Ive heard you should only clip the white part. I have not clipped his claws for fear of hurting him. I would NEVER declaw any type of pet, I was just curious if it was even an option for dogs.

Declawing a dog is not a good idea--they make a product called soft claws which is a plastic tip that is glued in place over the nail that will help with the scratching--u can also try using a nail file and taking off the sharp edges--other than that a nail trim at regular intervals should help (i will warn you that when you cut the nails they will be sharper for a few days until she wears them down--that is where the file comes in handy)
Hope this helps

I have never heard of having a dog de-clawed. That is cruel and unusual punishment, as far as I'm concerned. I agree with you, I don't think a vet would do something like that. As far as the nails are concerned, I would just have the vet or a groomer cut them. It's not expensive, and alot less stressful on you, and it does not take them that long to do it.

You are both right. Most of the time, the dogs claws are not removed. You might try rounding the claws so they don't hurt as much first. Just get an emory board file or some sand paper and sand the points down.

Sorry they don't "declaw" dogs. The only thing they do to dogs is remove the dew claw (the extra toe on the side off the foot). What you need to do to solve your problem is to teach the dog to greet or get attention by sitting, not by jumping up.

Why would you want to declaw a dog? It is so easy to just trim their nails or go to a groomer to have them do it. I do believe my vet has ever declawed a dog, not saying vets don't do it, but it's much more common in cats.
Plus, it's considered major surgery and it's expensive. Just trim, it's so much easier, cheaper and PAINFREE!!

your husband is nuts and cruel! Check www.softpaws.com! Or just get him groomed and his claws trimmed or made less pointy.
No vet would do that, you are right, i know a dog that someone crazy tried to declaw, and he is basically crippled.

I would have to agree with you. There are things you can do. I file my dogs nails after clipping so they won't be so sharp. I also use a Dremel tool to do my Boxers nails because they fight the clippers. they also sell nail covers. I don't have any exprience with these but you can get them at Jefferspet.com.

you dont have to declaw him, they make plastic tips for there nails. They just glue them on like a manicure and they wont scratch or hurt anything. "But they may try and not succeed" If you need more info just contact your vet and they'll tell you more about em
