we got a new kitten on saturday, a cute little grey tabby with honey colored eyes, so we named her honey....anyway the first day she hid all day but then late at night she jumped into our bed to be pet and played with, we played with her because we were happy she wnted to spend time with us. the second day was the same thing, she hid all day then wanted affection late at night 11-2am. she crawled all over us last night and attacked our legs, hands and fingres when we slept..... why does she only seem to want attention late at night and hide all day? she has just started eating and using her litter box last night.....also she met our 14 month old son for the first time this morning, how long should i limit their contact? i gave my son a treat to give her ( she didn't take it) and he touched her head then i figured that was enough contact for now, we actually got honey for him.... we have only had her for less then 48 hours.

Ok, cats are primarily nocturnal. They wake up most when we go to sleep, and they sleep all day. In fact, most adult cats sleep up to 20 hours per day.
She attacks your legs, hands and fingers because they're probably moving and she wants to play. Try leaving small balls around the house (my 7 yr old cat bats them around all night and we find them in all sorts of places in the morning).
As for feeding her treats, cats aren't quite like dogs. They're not too much of taking treats from your hands (though some will, particularly pieces of chicken and tuna).
What most cats really like is to be petted on the head, scratched gently under the chin and nice long strokes down the back.
As for interaction between kitty and a 14 month old, I would make it carefully supervised. Baby's that young don't understand what could hurt an animal. Be particularly cautious of him picking her up because little ones have a tendency to squeeze tight when they do and this could hurt the kitten.
You might try getting a string or toy on a rope that he could drag behind him. The kitten would love to chase that around.
Do make sure you take the kitten to the vet and keep the claws trimmed. That will keep the amount of scratches on you and your furniture down. There are also these things called Soft Claws that I've just discovered for my male cat. They're protectors your vet can glue onto their claws (kind of like acrylic nails) that make it tough for them to scratch anything with. With a little one in the house, that might be good.

Cats sleep 3/4 of their day and are nocturnal. That is why the kitten is up at night and away during the day (probably sleeping).
I would say let the kitten be around your son for about an hour or so. I wouldn't leave them together alone because you want to make sure the son doesn't do anything to the kitten or the kitten doesn't do anything to the son that would hurt them.

if I had seen this BEFORE you got your kitten I would have suggested an older cat.
Kids that young can REALLY hurt a kitten and kittens are still using their claws a lot at that age too, so they can really hurt your kid. Kittens use their claws on their mom so she lets down her milk so to a kitten using your claws makes you happy. Also claws are a defense, if your kid tries to grab the kitten it will claw to get itself free. At 14 months your son doesnt know how to "read" the kitten, does it want to play? does it want to cuddle? does it want to be let go?
Getting a kitten for a child of that age is not good. You should definately have the kitten as a FAMILY pet, and limit contact until both are older.
A kitten should not have full run of your house, make sure its in a smaller room so you can find it (so it cannot hide) and make sure you play with it durring the day. Do not play with it at night or you train it to be up and playing then and this will keep you up and is unfair to you.
Good luck - make sure your kitten is well looked after, vaccinated, dewormed and spayed at 6 months.

Cats are actually nocternal animals so it is normal for them to be more active at night. Also kittens are pretty much crazy but calm drastically after a year. As far as your child is concerned, just make sure that he doesn't hurt the kitten by squishing or pulling it's hair, tail, ears etc. Also, make sure the kitten doesn't scratch the baby, and watch for allergies because he won't be able to tell you if he's experiencing discomfort. Good Luck!

Well, cats are nocturnal, so that would explain the 2am wakeup call. I would try to break her of this as soon as you can, or it will become a habit. Might be hard at 1st, but better to do it while she's young. I don't think you really need to limit your sons contact with her, let him pet her & be around her as much as possible-AS LONG AS IT IS SUPERVISED. Other than that, good luck, she sounds pretty cute!!

Cats sleep 16 hours a day. She is probably sleeping thru the whole day and then playing at night. I would suggest shutting your & you son's bedroom door during the night. She will get the idea and soon she will want attention during the day.
Good Luck!

just give the kitten time to get used to your son, and about the kitten hiding , "shes probable in a dark place keeping cool" and it also seems that shes got her days and nights mixed up just like a baby. But remember she'll change as she gets older

Normal for that age kitten. Enjoy the time, she'll get bigger and won't bother you as much.
Ten weeks! The next few weeks are critical bonding time, so give her all the comforting she needs.
Keep in mind, cats are nocturnal, so night time is when they're most active.
