I never heard of this program when I was in the Army. My son-in-law has the opportunity to participate and go to college. It may keep him out of Afghanistan. Does any one know anything about it?

There should be a representative at the education center at his duty station. Basically, he can get out of the Army for 4 years to go to college and attend ROTC. Then he comes back in as a 2LT, and serves as a commissioned officer. There are scholarships available and he can also use his GI Bill. The problem is that you lose all your pay and military benefits (Tricare, PX privileges, etc) when you leave to go to college. If he has a family, it can be really hard.

There is also a way he can do it while still getting paid at his same pay grade. If he only has 2 years left to finish college, he can apply for the Active Duty Option. However, they only accept 100 soldiers a year for that option.

It will depend on the unit as to whether or not he can get out of a deployment for Green to Gold. I think the commander may have to sign off on it. The 2LT we talked to at the education center said they let him out 3 weeks before his unit deployed, but I don't think my husband's unit would have let him go.

Also, the deadline to apply for the fall is April 1st. He needs to get on it if he wants to go soon. He also has to have a 110 GT score. Talk to the Green to Gold people at the education center, they can tell him exactly what he needs to do.

Look for colleges offering it as they must have the program. At the college will be a military liaison. The program will be dependent upon how long it will take the person to complete degree. Upon completion the graduate must complete a term of service as per the contract. The person will receive some pay while attending. I have some info for a college in MO, as well as, some web site info if you wish for more. Just email. Good luck.

You've already gotten some good info -- I know this program can be hard for married couples at times as you don't draw your whole pay -- you are basically out of the military & in ROTC.l

Also getting out of a deployment is truly not the best reason to do this. It's not really getting out of it only delaying it until he's an officer -- how will he feel about that once he is? Will his troops follow him as well knowing his attitude was to dodge the bullet? However if he truly wants to be an officer & then serve as needed then go for it!
