I am looking to find a certified babysitter with very good references and who is dependable and reliable with children, and also who is affordable. Where would I look in my area (Southwest Florida) to find a certified babysitter? I am extremely nervous about leaving my kids with anybody else but me, but my husband and I really do need some time out every now and then. I will do my own research on the candidate as well as get to know the person a bit before I would leave them. Any answers would be appreciated!

When I found myself in need of a sitter, I called the local department of human services. This is called different things in different states. They will give you a list of registered baby sitters in your area. They are usually cheap and offer state meals. This is at no cost to you, it is because they are registered with the DHS. good luck and remember to keep an eye out weather they are registered or not.....

I suggest contacting the health and human services department in your area. They can give you a very long list of private and public babysitters/daycares. All of them on the list will be certified in CPR, backround checks will have already been done, ect. They are usually reasonable as they are used to being paid by the state (usually not more than $3.00 an hour depending on the state).

I live in Michigan, Our Extension office ( University of Florida has extension offices also) has a babysitters course that kids go through usually at 12 or 13. Maybe you could call them, and see if they have any graduates you could "interview". Otherwise, you could call your DHS and ask them for a Child Care Provider that is Licenced by the state. That is where I found daycare for my 2.5 year old (she was 15 months when she started daycare) We found a GREAT woman to care for her, in her home, with other children.

I hope this helps.

Go to the local high school and find out 3 or 4 students that the office would recommend as being responsible and trustworthy babysitters.
