The first 3 answers to your question were just wrong, and unnecessary. My daughter is now 17 months old, and we got her a potty when she was 14 months, because she showed interest when we would use ours. So I got it and put it in her bathroom, and every night before she takes a shower or bath, I undress her and put her on it. With the sound of the water, she has to use it, and over time has come to realize what it means. She even has realized about what #2 feels like, and when I walk in to get her from a nap, will run to the changing table. That tells me that YES she understands what is going on. I find it just outright rude that these other people are insulting you and your child by saying that at their age they won't understand. Children are so much smarter than we know, and I think that introducing the potty to him now, in the bathroom, is a great idea. That way there is no question what it is used for, and you get a child who isn't deathly afraid of the whole concept. GOOD LUCK!!

I tried that with my son and when it was time to potty train he didn't want to use it. I ended up with a seat that just goes over the toilet. My daughter has been a lot easier she wants to be like her brother and mom and use the potty so she got the little potty I tried with my son and she loves it, BUT I waited untill she told me she was ready. wait till your child gets interested in potty training if they still don't mind wetting there pants there not ready yet.

Children develop in different stages. If you expose your child to the potty, no bad will happen. If you notice signs that your child is ready to use the potty, like trying to pull off their diaper, saying poo poo, pee pee, trying to sit on the potty with clothes on, to say a few, you may try to potty train. But be advised, if you start too early trying to potty train, your child may jut regress and want nothing to do with the potty. Stay patient.

Well I honestly think that it helps!! But the truth is that he is too young to register in his head that he has to use the potty or bathroom at 14 months!! Usually mothers start potty training at 24 months or even older!!

Lissy is right that's what I did with both my girls ,
get a potty put it in the bathroom and every time you go bring him in there and tell him that that's his potty .Do not expect him to use it for about another year ,but when he's ready he will know where to go!

I got my son one when he was about 16 months he didn't start trying to train until about 18 months but he seemed real comfortable with it. I kept it in the bathroom because he always follows me when I go he would set on it and sometimes he would try. To me it wasn't really a hassle.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the potty chair out so the child will be comfortable with it. Who knows, maybe he will want to potty train early.

This is actually a pretty nasty idea. Your kids needs to recognize this as a bathroom related thing. Not something to carry around with him. It could become a problem when he does start potty training. If he uses it and still wants it around him, that's really un-sanitary. There are tons of other ways to get your kids into the potty mode. Take him in the bathroom with you. Ask him if he wants to try . . . if he says no, no big deal, if he says yes, then that's great and let him try. But I would say no to the having it around him all the time, this doesn't relate potty it just says something else to look at.

Sure it is a very good idea get it out now and play with it, sit teddies on it and such.
I gave my daughter one at 12 months she is now 18 months and we are just starting with the training, but we are taking it very gradually.
