CT uses x-rays to determine structure within the body. It represents this as a 3-D picture usually in slices. MRI uses magnetic resonance to determine the 3-D structure. It can be used to gain higher resolution and also to see small differences between tissue types. Also with the introduction of a dye both CT and MRI can give more accurate info. PET scans determine metabolic function by visualizing tracers (radioactive substrates) like sugar. Tissue that uptake and use more of the radioactive glucose is more metabolically active.
