Well I have been fortunate to fish cats in several different states. My first choice for baits would be any live fish that are legal to use in the waters I fish. In this order. Shiners, chubs, small suckers, blue gill/sunfish. If I was fishing waters where live bait isn't allowed I would use any of the above mentioned fish either cut up or whole depending on the size of fish being fished for and the size of above mentioned bait. Cut up carp also woks well at times. My favorite cut bait in Utah has been cut up white bass though. After fish live/dead/cut up I would go with a big glob of worms or night crawlers as my next favorite bait. After worms here is my choices for baits in order first to last of remaining baits. Shrimp, hot dogs, chicken livers, and last any dough/stink baits.

for great catfish this is tough to overcome a small bluegill for bait. My sister theory it become merciless till ultimately she caught a 38 pound flat-head on a 4" bluegill. Then her opinion replaced in a hurry. only make optimistic this is criminal on your state to apply them as bait. As for retaining the liver on your hook, use a bite of pantyhose. Tie a bite of liver in the nylon and positioned the hook during the nylon and it will stay to tell the tale till ultimately you're taking it off. The heady scent can nonetheless get into the water however the hook won't pull by using. you additionally can use small mesh which you will get at everywhere that sells textile or sewing aspects. We additionally use the mesh for making little sacs for fishing salmon eggs. good success alongside with your catfishing.

Try Smelt especially in the early season.I fish Cats on the Huron River and they catch me the largest Cats. You could also try Shrimp although I like to eat them and they are more expensive than Smelt.Try cutting 5 or 6 Smelt into small corn sized pieces an chumming it in the water then put a Whole Smelt on a Circle Hook this works great for me.I've also used Cheri O's threaded on a hook with a small piece of rubber band the kind you get on broccoli stalks (to hold them on) but you could catch some Carp. I love the fight of a BIG OLD CAT! Good Luck and KEEP FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try goldfish. They are an excellent bait for Flathead or Channelcat. If you use chicken liver put in on a treble hook then wrap a piece of pantyhose around it so it stays on better. If all else fails, do like us Okies do, go noodling.
Good Luck

Find a butcher and get you a bucket of blood/gelatin. Pour this into a flat pan and let it jell. Cut it into pieces. Catfish cannot resist.

Or simply buy "blood bait" at a bait shop.

try rubber worms with the groves in them
rub in the Catfish paste stuff into them and fish them on the bottom this works really well
try shiners, shad, doughy bait stuff from store

Liver has always been the most successful bait I've used. As far as store bought....BJ has been a very close second. Good luck.

I heard that beef liver works just as good as chicken liver. It would be a lot easier to keep on the hook.
