If you allergies are bad enough, you'll use a neti pot which is the thing I've found to be most effective. I took Allegra and claritin for several years and ended up being addicted (sneezed and had BAD allergies for a week after stopping taking them, then I was fine and didn't have bad allergies as consistently). Allegra works well for some, claritin for others, nothing for some.... The neti pot works for ALL and gives you instant relief. You just take a saline rinse and pour it through your nose to rinse it out. It is gross, but I do it all the time because it works so well. You can also get saline rinses from a company I can't remember off the top of my head, but neti pot, it'll stop the allergies right when you use it with no side effects. There are several websites and a blurb on npr.org about neti pots. Good luck!

You might want to talk to your doctor about a twice yearly allergy shot. This really helps some people who have a hard time finding a medicine that will work.

It depends on what you're allergic to. But as another said, there are the shots. And meanwhile you will have to get the allergen out of your environment.

Good luck!
