The trinity doctrine is a lie. Neither God nor Jesus ever promoted it. It is something that men came up with on their own because they felt that the Bible had to be more complicated than God made it--that would excuse them in their own minds from having to try to adhere to the teachings of God himself.

Why would you want to, it is not a Bible teaching. There is the Father, Jehovah, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the holy spirit, God's active force. They are not three God's in one. Jesus existed in heaven in his pre-human form before he came to earth as a completely separate individual from God. He came to earth, and was still a separate individual, and the holy spirit is something which God uses to help people gain accurate knowledge of him, and he used it to create with.
Genesis 1:2: "Now the earth proved to be formless and waste and there was darkness upon the surface of [the] watery deep; and God’s active force was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters."
Acts 2:1-4: "2 Now while the day of the [festival of] Pentecost was in progress they were all together at the same place, 2Â and suddenly there occurred from heaven a noise just like that of a rushing stiff breeze, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. 3Â And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed about, and one sat upon each one of them, 4Â and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different tongues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance."
People will try to say that the trinity is a mystery, and whatever, but God gave us his Word, the Bible, so that the ones that truly wanted to get to know him and love him would not be confused, but would have the truth.
John 4: 23: "Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him."
John 17:3: "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ"
Please don't confuse a child by trying to tell him about a false doctrine which man has made up.

You can't "explain" the Trinity at all, because you can't understand it. All you can do is expose the child to the known facts, and then he/she will know almost everything there is to know about the Trinity.

picture a three-leaf clover, three different leaves, all equal, but all part of the same plant...
St. Patrick is said to have used this one to explain the Trinity to the ancient Irish people...

You explain it as an Idea. You explain that it is an Idea that a large number of people have faith in. Better yet you wait until the "KID" is old enough to understand it using the text with which it was written.

Tough to explain. Pick up a three leaf clover(three leaves yet one clover) and explained that it was revealed to us from God through his son Jesus.
Dt. 6:4
When we say God is one, we are saying he is complete and unchangeable, one in essense, being and substance. God however is a communion of persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Although there are three persons, there is one common divine nature which each full possesses.
However while they are one in divine nature, they are distinct in their relationship to each other.

I am a mother, a daughter, and a co-worker.
I act differently in each role,.
The colors of light Red/Blue/Yellow can be seperate or combine together to combine the whole completeness of white light.
3 seperate phases of God acting with one mind and purpose.

Just tell them who each one is and what their roll is. God is the Father creator of all things. Jesus is the Son of God and saviour. Holy Spirit is the comforter to all men and he leads us to Christ.
