Unfortunately people have a tendency to leap before they look and just base their opinions on first glance and don't take the time to find out what whatever they're judging is really all about.

some people misunderstand the distinction between being judgmental and holding someone accountable. When I was young I was involved in practically every detestable sin known, but now I have found the Truth and Life. I could never judge someone because I have done the same dispicable things in my youth. I can hold them accountable, just as I wish somone held me accountable for the things I did.

Nobody has the right to Judge anyone else because we have all messed up at times. Judgement = condemnation
accountability = heart conviction

You make a very valid point in your additional info: in a situation like this, you must use discression not be judgmental. remember judgement = condemnation. You cannot judge this man for it, but you also wouldn't tempt him in his past behavior by leaving him alone with your children either. He is just as capable of being forgiven by God as I am for the things I have done. Discression is the key in this situation - using discression, it may not be in your best intrest to put you, your children, or even the man for that matter into a situation that could be tempting or inappropriate for either of you. I understand what you are saying, and it truly IS a difficult thing sometimes.

Simply put people fear the unknown and are unwilling to compromise in their minds the change it would bring if they actually accepted something "different" as "OK". It would throw off the so called balance of society as it were and let in to many new ideas. People can not take change that rapidly if at all in most circumstances. That goes for most anything including our recent top topics like religion and sexuality and the list is limitless. Just remember where you are and let them believe what they will.

People are always looking for the truth, a purpose, the meaning of life, a side to be sides on. People desire to belive in something, even if they have to convice themselves that its the truth. Though I can tell you TRUE Christianity is not judemental. I am not out to go and judge people and tell them that they are wrong. I am though in a relationship with a God, the God that is a very personal and loving relationship and would like to share it with others.

People like to categorize and assume. It's our nature.
If you categorize and assume things you can do much more work.
If you don't, and you have to question everything again, you never get anything done.

Example. You can sit down and ponder about whether or not it's good for the climate and all to burn gasoline. You can review all the arguments in favour and against global warming actually occuring.
Or you can get in your car and go to work.

Especially questioning ourselves is a hard thing to do. We like to think of ourselves as 'mostly right'. We need a positive look of ourselves, to function as human beings.
So when it concerns religious questions, we don't like to tear down the fabric of our own self esteem. It's against human tendency to say 'everything I believe in in wrong'.

Especially religious matters, when confronted with cold logic, are not a good combination. When you look at religion logically, it all falls apart.
The bible contradicts itself, as I am sure many religions do.
So that's the last reason why we don't like to debate about religious matters: it's hardly defendable.

Therefore we're already ready to judge in religeous matters: we're right, those who disagree haven't seen the light. Phew, on to other matters, quickly, quickly!

People judge when they feel very very strongly that they are "right." It's called faith. If your religious faith is very strong, you couldn't possibly feel that any other religion, or lack thereof, may also be right. That's why religion is one thing that many people are very closed-minded about, and feel that those who don't believe the same things they do are wrong.

I myself am a Christian, and though I love people and have a tolerant and compassionate nature, I still think that people who are not Christians are doomed. If you think other people may be right, you don't have a very strong belief or faith.

I don't think that gives me the right to be unkind to people because they are different than me, for the record. Nor do I think it makes them "bad" people, just not saved from hell as I believe I am. I believe that God is the one true judge. It is not for me to judge, but to love and accept.

Why are you asking a question such as this? You question everyone else, yet just a few days ago you yourself questioned atheists saying to prove to you that we don't believe in a god......

Bit of a hypocrite aren't you?

Quick to judge? or, Quick to defend their right to think differently or lead a life free from persecution?

Practically all the non christian relions and non christian peoples are tolerant of each other and peace loving. It is only Christianity that seeks to prove only they are right and continually criticises and tries to belittle others beliefs.

Two things:
1 People judge because they think they're perfect.
2 Because they don't believe that God is the only true Judge.
