I need to speed up my Toshiba Tecra Laptop.. Any programs to speed it up?!?

I just downloaded Registry Mechanic.. I read the reviews saying it sped up their computer.. I want to regain the speed when i first got my computer a year ago.. Im willing to spend up to 30 bucks for a program to speed up my system.. Any programs?
