God created us to be in relationship with Him. He calls those who belong to Him "children". He tells us to enter His kingdom as children. Petitionary prayer is a natural part of the relationship God wants us to have with Him. He's God, we're humans - it's clear that we need to ask. When we go from needs to desires, we open our hearts to Him. We deepen our relationship with Him.
It's a joy for Him when we open our hearts to Him in faith. He calls us to trust Him enough to accept whatever answer He gives and to go on opening our hearts to Him. It's easy when He keeps saying "yes". It's faith when He starts saying "no". That's when we have to change our view of Him or ourselves. Petitionary prayer is getting to know the One we pray to.

God answers prayer according to HIS will. Having said that there are cases in scripture where God has reconsidered an issue because of mans intervention and chosen an alternative plan. The ultimate result is always that God is leading mankind back to himself.

Prayer in any form concentrates the scattered mind.
Anything done with concentration is effective.
Effect depend on the degree of concentration.

God is influenced by no man.
Prayers are for the person praying only. God already has his plan in action.

No...
God is not obligated to answer any of our prayers.
But we are told to make our requests known to Him....and His peace that He gives to us will surpass all understanding.
