Get light brown highlights, because you dont't wan't to get blonde highlights because it would look streaky/skunky looking. So I think a light brown highlight would look really great.

Brown hair is beautiful, and you have the option of adding a bit of spice or a bit of natural highlight to your look when you decide to highlight.
I think caramels that are just a shade or two lighter than the natural colour give a wonderful glow to brown hair, especially as we move into seasons where we are outdoors more. You'll definitely get the highlighted look that you're wanting, but it will look natural as well.
I think reds and coppers (and the intensity of the copper depends on how drastic you want to go with it) definitely add a spice, but I think the more dramatic you go the less 'natural' it begins to look. And if you are saying 'copper highlights aren't very natural to begin with', I will say 'yes, I know... but a little spice makes people say wow and too much spice can sometimes lead to 'woah' '.
Before you have your hair done, it never hurts to go online (as you've done) and look at pictures to see what you like best... and though I suggest having your highlights done professionally (though I've done my own a time or two), I think it's great to head down the hair colour aisle at the local store and take a peek to see if any of the colours catch your eye.
Hope your hair turns out beautifully!

Im also a brunette and first tried high lights a couple of years ago. I went for Red, i admit i was a little shocked when it was suggested but a subtle red tone really works on brown hair.
I fancied a change and knowing that blonde wouldn't work I was shown Caramel its halfway between brown and blonde but doesnt look as harsh as blonde highlights would.
A good hairdresser would have a book with all the samples in and they lift them out and put them on your hair so you can see what you like.

Being a fellow member of the ''Emo'' Scene and working for Superdrug i serve Many customers with the Same Question.. I normally find that Plantinum Blonde Highlights really suit a Brunette.. or maybe a Deep Red or Coppery Gold Maybe.. worth a try... even get a wash in and wash out one so you can decide what you like most..

I am also a natural brunette, i have quite dark brown hair and just recently i added caramel and a light chocolate colour to my hair. It looks really nice and natural. I only did half a head. If you see you really like it next time you can do the whole head.

Hi, there! I'm a natural brunette, too. Right now, I have dark blonde highlights and they are great. It depends on the color of your skin. Try dark blondes or light browns. Good luck!!

I also have brown hair and green eyes, and I got blonde highlights, and I get so many compliment. Most people say that they really make my green eyes pop, and I have to agree:)
My hair looks a lot like Jennifer Aniston:

But not as blonde.
If you had blue or brown eyes, you could go more with a red or copper toned highlight. But for green, blonde works best.

I am in the same position with hair and eye color. I got some blondish brown highlights and everybody loved it. I got so many compliments. Red is good too, but when I tried that people said the blondish brown was better because that's the true color your hair turns when it is bleached in the sun during summer.

I have two tones of red put into my naturally dk. brown hair. One is towards orange in colour and the other more dark, wine, pinky. Sounds gross but looks good. I think they are called lowlights rather than highlights as these would be blondish?
