My grandpa just had cataract surgery two weeks ago in one eye and he complains of a constant "rubbing, itching" discomfort which hasn't gone away. I figure this is normal but since he worrys a lot I'd like to give him an educated answer to provide some relief.

What causes this sensation? How long can this last? Are there any topical treatments which may help his discomfort? Thanks.

I've had cataract surgery, in the past, on both eyes. The medicines that worked for me MAY NOT be his solution (pardon the pun). It's a natural situation that happens after cataract surgery for SOME people--I had to use drops periodically after mine for a throbbing caused by a nerve acting up. Don't let any of this frighten you or him. Being only 2 weeks out, he still is in the recovery stage--have him talk to his doc regarding the best answer for his situation. They can help him. It will be "like a blessing in disguise" for sure when he gets the full extent of his vision, trust me!

What should be expected after cataract surgery..?

The operated eye is patched for 2-3 hours after surgery. The patient is instructed to use eye drops after surgery for 3-4 weeks. Mild discomfort, irritation, watering, itching is common after surgery which usually reduces within 2-3 days. The patient is instructed to avoid rubbing or pressing the eye. The patient should also avoid exposure of the operated eye to dirty water, cloth or hands to reduce the risk of infection. Most of the restrictions apply only for a week after which the patient can continue with normal daily routine. There are no dietary restrictions and the patient can continue to perform light household chores or professional work immediately after the surgery. For more visit : http://drishtieyecentre.in/

Do not compromise the healing of your grandpa's eye by taking advice on here. Give the eye doctor a call and see what he recommends. It may be that he has special drops to help your grandpa's eye feel better.
