A Muslim is a person who believes that there is only one
God who is the one and only, A God who is the self sufficient master, A God who beggets not nor is he begotten
and none is compareble unto his God.When a person
submits his will to this one and only one God almighty and
worships him on his terms and conditions is in a state of Islam and elegible for Paradise. Now if this muslim begins to
believe in various Gods liike a Triune God or begins to
believe that God has a son like the christians believe,Then this is regarded as a blasphermy and he is already a dead
man in the eyes of God dead in this world and lost in the
Heareafter. So do not worry what Islam or the Quran says
is the punishment of such a person But the BIBLE says in the
book of Leviticus '' Anyone that blasphemeth the Lord.....Stone him to death''.The Quran may imply something similar but Allah the all merciful adds that If the person Turns Back in repentance then Allah is the all forgiving Full of Kindness towards his slaves.

I grew up in an Islamic country ( Malaysia ) and sometimes people would convert away from Islam for Christianity as Christians would leave Christianity for Islam, and nothing would happen, no one ever was killed, the only people getting killed were the child rapers, molesters, and drug dealers.

I live in malaysia and one of the mufti said that nothing in the Holy Quran stating that we should kill anyone that convert out from islam. Nevertheless, in my opinion if some one convert out of islam, it's their right and i'm glad that they convert out of islam because those who do are mostly corrupted with world plessures and i fell ashame if they claimed they are muslim because how they live their life is just same as any other kaffir, so better if they convert out of islam and save the image of islam. BUT if they started persuading other muslim or insulting islam in the open like Salman Rushdie, i feel nothing wrong if they were killed. Convert if u want to but don't do anything that insult Islam in any manners.

That is what Caliph Omar told them. But of course they are much more tolerable today as it is a matter of democracy and human rights, love for God/neighbor.etc.

The Caliph intended it so that Islam would make gains and no losses.

4:89 They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homes in the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity) then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them,

So anyone that changes thier mind should be killed? Is that the answer to everything? Mans "God", is a war god, so it makes sense. Man will dominate man, to his own injury.

Well, any fragile religion would be threatened by doubt creeping in, wouldn't it? Any religion teaching "believe this or die", or "believe this or burn" is a sick, sad and extremely weak religion.
