My German Shepherd went in season almost six weeks ago. I let her past because she is still pretty young and I won't breed her until she is about 2 years old and becomes more mature. However she is still swollen. Does it take that long before the swelling goes down completely. I am started to get worried hoping she does'nt have an infection.

Hi...Don't worry, it takes about 2 months after the start of her heat for her uterus and everything to go back to normal size. Was this her first heat? So you say its been 6 weeks since she started wait another 2 weeks to see what happens, if the swelling doesn't go down then take her to the vet. Good luck to you and your pup.

The average heat cycle for a dog is approximately 3 weeks and since this an an average, some heats are shorter (as little as 7-10 days), others are longer (4 weeks or more).

but if you are concerned the best thing to do would consult a vet even if just on the phone! keep an eye on her and for any odd colored discharge or smell, if there istake her to vet imediatly. but for now id call the vet for his advice . on the dog some heat cycles are alot longer etc. good luck!!
