Two have mentioned "exercise". I know where you are coming from. Now I am 71 years old and I'm quite fit and well.
Now, my advice to you is to take the sensible route; that is to regard "exercise" as the most important route and to supplement this with a sensible diet. It is important to recognise that whatever you do the most important thing to accept is that your body has a "natural" weight and that to deviate from it is to harm your long term health.
In your question you have not even mentioned about your exercise regime!!
I regard people who go off full pelt to the commercial gym as somewhat misinformed. Now if you are female I recognise that it is difficult for you to take your chances and go off running/jogging. This is of course a preferred route. If there is an athletic cub nearby that is a good idea. Also a Fun Runners Club. Failing this a good routine of skipping is fantastic - your exercise whatever way you do it is to work up to a "puff" - that's aerobics.
When I was between 17 and 22 years of age I was Bucks County Cross Country champion. I used to eat a good square meal every day - sorry three good square meals.
Please accept that the reason you have gained extra weight is solely due to the fact that you are putting too much fuel into your tank. Live a happy life as you are and do DO the exercise until the day you die.

As you said, you are not massively overweight. It's advisable to consult your doctors first, to see that you are indeed NEED to lose weight. Some think they do but in fact they don't. If you are dead set to, whatever the doctor says, you should at least find out the standard protion your height & weight should be.
Then it's just a question of following a well balance diet. A golden rule is to eat more vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fish, moderate amount of everything else. Learning to count calories help a lot to know what food contains a lot more than the other, as any successful diet basically achieved by taking in a little less calories than your body consumes.
Most important, don't ever try to cut out everything drastically & aim to lose too much weight all at once. !-2 lbs a week is very good as long as you don't suddenly go on a binge! Read some books on the subject to gain more knowledge about all the do's & don't's too.

All these special diets are a waste of time. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Eat a healthy diet cut down on the fat, sugar and complex carbs and do some exercise, oh and loads of water. It really is as simple as that.

Dont diet, exercise instead. Dont skip meals, just watch what you are eating. Are you eating foods high in sugar or a lot of starch? Cut these down, eat lots of veggies.
The rest is simple, start speed walking in the morning. It gets your motabolism working earlier and burns a lot of calories. It is easier on your body than running or jogging and you can do it for longer periods of time there fore you have the potential to burn even more calories. You need to burn colories, not cut them.
With exercise and healthy food choices you will lose that extra weight in no time and have a better chance of keeping it off over time! Good luck and good health to you.

i recommend not going on a diet. instead, you should just cut out some of the fat and sugar that you are currently eating and add a bit of exercise to your routine. making small but permanent changes to the way you live, as opposed to totally changing the way you eat for a short period of time, is more likely to really work.

I've had more success with low GI, because it allows you to eat whole grains which make you feel satisfied.

I have been dieting on and off for 30 years, all diets work if you stick to them but the weight comes back eventually. - You have to re-educate your self for the rest of your life, if you stay off high calorie foods - fried foods, sauces, chocolate etc, stick to breakfast lunch and dinner and the weight will come off - the slower you loose it the longer it stays off.
