I am drawing portraits from photographs of my friends. I make a few bucks from it too.

Friends' photos were done by a professional photographer at Sears or K-Mart or another Studio.

Do I need permission from the photographer to do portrait drawings from these photographs?

i used to work for sears portrait studio and i have only heard of some one remaking prints of being illegal.....so you can make profit off of those images, also....there are so many images being made daily, they are not going to remember nor take the time to look and see if your art is a drawing from one of their images.

I'm not sure, but I would say you should check with the photographer, considering you're selling them.
If you're drawing for your own personal enjoyment, probably not.
