i was a breeder of chows for years great dogs stubborn ,man they were stubborn they love being outside in the snow and hate the summer but they make great indoor dogs i had a black male very very aggressive i am not the type to give up on a dog so i kept him at the time he was my best friend but no stranger could turn their back on him he then i had a female cinnamon she was sweet as could be would not hurt a fly they were one person dogs they loved me and accepted my family but clung to my every move they dont enjoy kids they tolerated mine i guess because they were part of the family. these dogs require constant grooming brushing a few times a day and not just a brush over they have a second coat underneath that needs to be brushed and i highly recommend training a good trainer this breed also makes an awesome home protector they WILL NOT let anyone in uninvited they can get along well with other dogs again my male did not want to be bothered with other dogs but my female loved other dogs but this will be different for every dog if you have any other questions feel free to email me cmann70726@yahoo.com

I had a chow when I was younger. He was great--VERY playful and energetic. I don't know about any dog being born to be house trained, but as for my chow, he was fairly easy to housebreak. As far as being bad tempered, it depends on how you raise him. My dog was sweet and loved everyone--even when a boy hit him with a rock, he still wanted to play with him later. I had a neighbor who had 2 chows, and they were some of the meanest things I'd ever seen--but their owner wasn't a peach, either. A funny thing about chows is they're actually a lot smaller than they look--wait till you give one a bath, and all that hair isn't puffed out! They do shed a lot so they need to brushed daily, especially in the summer. We always kept ours in the house in the summertime because besides shaving them, there's not a lot you can do to keep them comfortable when it's hot out. They need a lot of room to play because, even though they do have their lazy moments--or days!--when they want to run and play, they REALLY want to run and play. If you decide to get a chow, make sure you have a sturdy dog brush and either a big yard or you're close to a dog park. Good luck!

Chows can be a challenging breed to own. They are suspicious dogs by nature, but some irresponsible breeding has made many of them quite aggressive with strangers. If you're serious about purchasing a chow puppy you MUST visit with the parents first to see how their temperament is.
Chows need a lot of training and socialization to be sure they are good canine citizens (their temperament is 50% genetic and 50% training). Chows have been known for their "bad attitudes" for so long that some insurance companies are now refusing to cover households with them or are charging an increased "dangerous dog" fee.
Chows also have a lot of pretty serious health concerns also, like hip dysplasia, entropion (as well as other eye problems), allergies & skin issues, hormone problems, and immune system issues just to name a few.
Chows can be wonderful dogs when good breeding and training is involved. In my interaction with them I see many more aggressive dogs than I do nice dogs though.

Check out these websites for some pretty good info ( the 1st one has the best info I think):

I have a chow mix dog and he is the most loving, playful dog ever. He is a little over 2 years old, and still acts like a puppy. He does growl sometimes but then he whimpers an apology right away. These dogs are not easy to boss around, be prepared to use positive reinforcements such as treats and squeaky toys to get his cooperation.

When my husband was a child, he had a Chow. They are one person animals.
This one liked men only and was extremely protective of my husband. Whoever
the dog was with--either his mother or father--and the other one tried to take
him, the Chow would get mean. Believe me, NO ONE got close that shouldn't
be there. I don't know how much help this is. Chows are such beautiful dogs.
Good luck on your decision. I would do some checking on the internet or talk to
people who have had them before you decide.

I try not to be biased on any one particular breed of dog. I think it mostly comes down to each dog and it's personality. However, after saying that, I have heard nothing but bad things about Chows. I'm sure you've heard it. So in the end it's your own decision.

My uncle has a chow and he is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. He's just like a big teddy bear. :) I'm not around him to much, but from what I've seen he is a very laid-back dog, though I wouldn't call him "lazy". He seems very smart, but he is VERY stubborn and sometimes refuses to come when called. I wouldn't plan on getting one if you live in a very hot area, unless you plan on keeping it shaved in the summer.

Chow chows are very stubborn. Usually they will hook to one person in a family and that will be who he stays with. These dogs are a little aggresive and sometimes unpredictable. They are usually very easy to potty train, however. Hope this helps.

now they are not bad tempered. and they will bite people they dont know. no they are not lazy. they love to play. mine does. and she loves to play with balls. mine plays soccer. but them my pit bull comes into the sceen them pops all of the balls. lol. the only thing is if u get a female i wouldnt get another female. but my chow dosnt really like other dogs on her property unless its smaller than her and if its my pit bulls sons. and my chow chases bears. and they dont let them near us. her and my pit. my chow has saved us fom them. and my chow has attacked 2 dogs. 2 german sheperds. and they didnt fight back. and the love car rides. my does. and she loves to sleep on the couch and bed. oh hears a quick story. me and my sister where at the laundry mat and we didnt have our chow on a leash (shes very good off of leash, cuz she knows to listne to me) and my chow saw this man. he looked like he lived on the streets and he was smokin, and while me and my sister where doing the luandry my dog would not go into the laundry mat as long as that guy was standing in front of it, and she eyed him and she had a low growl(to warn him to stay away and keep his distance) and she only moved when we left. shes a great protector. she only has a bit one person 2 when he turned his back on her. and she never use to like people who wears all black or uniforms. but now cuz shes 8 shes a little more relaxed. but she tells us when theres bad people around. oh and i do believe that they are house trained cuz when we got her form the wood she had 21 ticks on her and oil. and she was 1 1/2 then. and now shes 8. and when we had her she never pee'd in the house. not once.
