I think you'll struggle to find any evidence to suggest Admiral Nelson was anything other than a hero, although you could try some French Naval Journals.
One of the aspects of being a Great military commander ,is too improvise away from 'the norm' to get the job done. Therefore if I was you I would look at, obviously the Battle of Trafalgar, and most notably how he deviated from the 'ships of the line' tatics which is what the French expected from him.
This led to Napolean being unable to invade England, in a similar fashion to Hitlers ambitions after the Battle of Britain. Another battle to consider is the infamous Battle of the Nile, as well as looking at how he is revered by the British public today, 202 years after his death. Although his philandering with mistresses was frowned upon in that era
Hope this helps, and i wouldn't try and reference any of it but it may give you food for thought

Nelson's flagship on the conflict of Trafalgar, HMS Victory, had a team of 441 English, sixty 4 Scots, sixty 3 Irish, 18 Welsh, 3 Shetlanders, 2 Channel Islanders, one Manxman as properly as 71 foreigners made up of twenty-two individuals, seven Dutch, six Swedes, 4 Italians, 4 Maltese, 3 Frenchmen (probable Royalist volunteers), 3 Norwegians, 3 Germans, 2 Swiss, 2 Portuguese, 2 Danes, 2 Indians, one Russian, one African and 9 West Indians. Now that's what you ought to somewhat call a actually multinational team.

Victory is one element of how history judges a leader. But inspiring men to achieve more is a sign of greatness and a element of being a hero. Nelson was noted for his considerable ability to inspire and bring out the best in his men, to the point that it gained a name: "The Nelson Touch". Certainly, he ranks as one of the greatest field commanders in military history. Many consider him to have been the greatest warrior of the seas.
