I'm not an authority on God, but definitely, the spiritual universe ( us, as spiritual beings) are engaged in putting order into the material universe which is definitely Chaos.
The problem is the chaos that is the material universe has overwhelmed us to a large extent and has inflicted it's chaos onto us. We have become somewhat chaotic as a result. But the primary goal or purpose is still in tact.... to put order into it.
The basis of all religions as I see it (whether they can achieve it or not) is to rehabilitate us as spiritual beings and pull us out of the chaos and help us to again put in order.
I don't know if this was from God originally , but we are definitely trying to get back to a state that could be considered Godlike, i.e. able to create order.
Those of us who have not completely given up trying and succumbed to the chaos anyway.

Not so sure it's the basis for all religions. Seems to me a lot of new religions are relying more on the Balance between the two. Example: How would you know how good "Good" really is if you didn't have something bad to compare it to? You wouldn't understand how to cope with the bad things in life if you didn't understand the balance between the 2 concepts.
If God created Order, then before there was Order, God was in Chaos? Or do you believe there was neither Order or Chaos before God created Order?
Philosophy of these things can lead us down some strange roads with strange questions. Don't you think?

Svetlana is partially correct; power plays a big part in the history of organized religion, but your hypothesis of "order vs chaos" is valid, too.
I read somewhere that the human mind is basically "hard-wired" to ask mystical questions at some point; supposedly when we're not preoccupied with being chased by a tiger or warding off starvation.

Not in my opinion. Religion causes everything from verbal discord to wars. If you look at the conflict and killing in the world today, the majority is caused by religious differences..

Don't most tyrants enforce order anyway? No wonder your god is so alike.
