They don't see color, and the fire hydrant is the boldest color they see, so it's natural to take a **** where they smell other dogs have marked their territory.

A friend was over a few days a go, my dog ran out to mark his tires. I screamed at my dog to stop. My friend said, it's ok, he's just sending my dog a p-mail.... They're marking their territory. I live in the country, no fire hydrants, so my dog uses trees and the tires of whatever vehicles are around.

My opinion is that it's similar to a tree stump.
Dogs see colors differently to us so it may be possible.

And often hydrants are the only thing around to wee on in built up areas.

I think they just like to mark their territory on them. I don't think it's just fire hydrants but everything like trees, fence posts, signs. Hydrants are just the typical.

It's not the fire hydrent... It's just the fact of an object that easy access for them to make their property and release themselves (2 birds in one stone). But yeah fire hydrents I guess at time are easiest at times.
