when you dont sleep too good, or do not have enough sleep, your body cant produce insulin at an optimal level, thus poor control of blood glucose and more fat storage. Also if you sleep more u cant be eating, so the amount of meals and therefore calories will be reduced, sleep is great for fat loss.

Insufficient sleep drops your overall metabolic rate and greatly decreases your base caloric usage per unit of time.
It also reduces how much energy you have and makes you feel worse and thus less likely to exercise or less intensely or for less time.
Exercise on the other hand can increase your base caloric usage throughout the day with as little as 20 minutes of intense activity.
Further, lack of sleep makes you crave carbohydrates and high calorie foods because your body thinks it is suffering from lack of energy due to starvation rather than lack of sleep. Your body actually goes into a mode where it tries to retain as many calories as possible while starting to shut down or slow some functions.
Being tired you also tend to take the quickest and easiest options to eat and end up eating foods that are not very healthy.
Our bodies have not evolved to handle lack of sleep very well as it is rarely a problem when you live a natural lifestyle regulated by the rise and fall of the sun.
Lack of sleep also inhibits the ability of the body to manufacture certain neurochemicals and vitamins from nutrients stored in the body and causes a great deal of stress on your body.
Lack of sleep is now considered an epidemic in the US and a huge contributor to the weight and health problems of the general population.

Not necessarily true. Now that I sleep 20 hours a day I weigh nearly 150lbs. When I worked 16 hrs a day and only slept 4 hrs. I weighed 117. I only eat one time a day . I am not gaining any more but I am definitly not losing any.
