First, if you want to lose middle weight, cut sugar completely out of your diet. Also, try to go with whole grains and wheat breads, muffins, pasta if you want to eat carbohydrates.
Your exercise routine should be consistent, yet you will need to add some variety so you wont get bored. Try to make it to the gym at least 3 times a week for at least 45 minutes each day. Be sure to do a little warm up before you begin your workout. 3-5 minutes is sufficient for a warm up. You should try some light weights for arms, maybe even your legs or back depending on what you want to shape up. Light weight, high reps are the best for toning. I highly recommend doing situps. There are so many ways you can do situps. You can do them on the regular mat, you can try the ball, you can also try the situp benches at your gym. Be sure to work your lower abs and obliques (side stomach muscles) to completely toner your middle. After this, then you should do some cardio. Atleast 20 minutes of cardio should be sufficient for you. However, I dont know how much you weigh, etc. And one day, when the trainer doesnt look so scary, you should ask him to show you some situp exercise or maybe even to recommend a pilates class. Good luck!

Cardio, like aerobics or running will help you lose weight the fastest, try doing eithe rof those 3 times a week, you can keep your same diet and since you're doing activity your not used to doing, your weight will drop, if you do aerobics, your muscles will get toner. For your gut though. You need to eat less, but more often. Try not to "stretch" your stomach out, do crunches or situps, but don't do the weight machines for your abs, that's gonna build up your muscles in your gut and get those bigger (adding to the big gut), your gut hangs out cause your stomach is stretch and used to being that way, so you need to let it shrink. Eat less, but more often, and do aerobics.

To lose weight you need to burn calories. Vigorous aerobic activity is the best way to do that. Swim, bike, run, etc.

As for the trainer, he might look scary, but its safe to assume he loves fitness, and once you get him started, he'll tell you way more than you want to know. Besides, its his job to help people like you.
