right click on your deskptop, choose "arrange icons by" then put a tick in "show desktop items"

Depend what version of windows you have if you have windows XP the mail principal 4 icons which are my documents, my computer, my network places and internet explore can be enable using the properties on your desktop if you have any other icons that is not normal make sure we don’t spy ware on the computer or any other system relates issue to bring back those
1)right click on the desktop
2)left click select properties
3)select the display tab
4)select the customized button click on it
5)you going to see the icons that I mention you they gonna have a check mark, make sure you check those
6)click the ok button it is going to take to system properties
7)it click ok again it is going to take you to desktop and you main four icons should there

Right click on the desktop
Select "Arrange Icons" from the menu
Near the bottom is a check box for turning on/off all the icons

If they actually were deleted check the recycle bin and restore them from there or Use system restore.
click on start go to programs, Accessories, system tools, and click on system restore and choose the one that is newest
that still had your icons but if you go to far back you could lose
information.

Sounds likw windows has been tidying up. If you have a folder on the desktop called unused icon, you'll find them in there
