If you don't have Genealogy Software, you should get some and take advantage of the free time with some of the pay sites, that is a good way to start the Branches on your family tree. Remember your ancestors are not just Bowater surname, and your family tree out to 1886 will propably have 8 to 16 Branches, each with a different surname (usually).

Using www.ancestry.co.uk and www.freebmd.org.uk I found a James Edward Bowater b Dudley Apr - Jun 1886 with a Central Record Office index No 6c 109. I then found a James Bowater being married in Dudley in 1907 he would be then 21, the CRO index is 6c 195. Using the same CRO index it looks like he married one Amy Moss sometime between Oct and Dec 1907. I cant be sure that this is your ancestor, its a time consuming operation, but it might give you a lead. Best of luck.........Allan

do it like a detective
get forms or buy family tree software
then collect the data one piece at a time
my mom spent like 10 years doing that so I know a LOT about my ancestors
good luck, its fun if you take your time and try to visualize what life was like for them and who they were
