There is no pill yet known to science and man, that will help you lose weight AND keep it off. If you want the weight gone for a few months as you damage your internal organs and cut your life off by several years, then look for a diet pill. Just remember that you'll put the weight back on, after all that damage, PLUS many more pounds since you also ruin your metabolism with the pills. There is no magic bullet. Don';t be in a hurry to lose weight, losing any more than 2-3 pounds a week (through lowered calories and exercise) isn't healthy and will come back on faster than it was lost.

She most likely in on Phentermine (brand name Adipex). This FDA approved medication can be used properly with a appropriate diet and exercise. But it is not for long term use. If your friend is not changing her habits or exercising then most likely all her weight will come back once she stops taking the med. Side effects include, dry mouth, insomnia, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate. This medication has to be prescribed by a physician.

if you start drinking a lot of water you can lose a lot of weight anyway. But a lot of water, so that your stomach is constantly full of water. Drink as much water as you can, so that you feel you can't eat or drink any more. Do follow a healthy diet, and you'll see results!

Sounds to me like your friend is taking Phentermine (Which is the generic form of Adipex...so either one really). You feel very dehydrated when you take it, so you are thirsty and thus, wee tons! Also, the weight loss from this pill is very immense and noticeable, fast!
It is a prescription diet pill, but you can also find it online and places like classicpharmacy.com, mylittle pharmacy.com, etc. Expensive, strong, and very worth it if you can handle taking it.... but to be honest, it's basically just legalized/prescribed speed so I don't really suggest it.
