Firstly i don't think its fair to leave a dog alone all day! If it barks or people find out that you are leaving it inside all day then they will ring the rspca! Its cruel - both me and my partner work all day and have two dogs which ocasionally come to work with us and get walked in our breaks at 10am and 1pm (as well as thier morning and evening walk) or his parents have them for the day where they enjoy digging up thier garden!
Even getting a dog from a rescue centre is worse in my opinion as they can be timid and need alot of time to get used to new owners especially those who have been treated badly!
Lastly terriers may be small dogs (most of them) but they still are very energetic - you may end up with a dog that will chew your furniture and then you'll have to end up shutting it in a small room!
If you really really want a dog i would suggest getting a laid back dog (not a puppy) Pre-loved is a good site!
Then get a kennel and good sized run (comfortable and heating will be needed for the winter) that in the day you can put him/her in so it can go inside or out as and when it pleases! You still have the problem of it barking though and annoying the neighbours! - It would also be nice if someone you knew could walk it at lunchtimes for you! But you'd still need to walk it mornings especially and then evenings!
I wouldn't recommend a spaniel especially not a springer, labrador!
Possibly Basset Hound are lovely household dogs! And don't need too much excersise - although they are prone to howling and barking!
Whippets - are very fun loving dogs and if they had a yard to run around in a daily walk will do!
Pugs are very easy to look after dogs and very devoted and sensitive! They are getting quite popular now! Great with children, short coat, They are very eager to please and if you train at a young age will never forget, Regular excersise is needed to stop these little dogs becoming lazy but tehy dont need too much!

Think about whether you should get a dog as it will be left all day. Can you or your partner get to the house around lunchtime?
If the animal cant get outside, chances are it will mess in the house.
Most dogs will become agitated if left too long.
Having said that, take a look at the site listed below.
It has all breeds and has a small write up on characteristics and basic requirements.
www.epupz.co.uk
www.epups.co.uk
To access the site fully just register, its completely free.
Don't forget that a dog (even a small one) needs regular exercise and stimulation.
Think hard about whether the dog will be happy as well as yourselves.
Maybe consider using a Dog Rescue Centre, these dogs sometimes have a little history and you might find a perfect pet that can be left during the day.
Remember a Dog is not just for Christmas, with careful cutting and freezing it should last well after the New Year!

You may find you cannot legally own a dog.
In the UK it is against the law for a dog to be left alone for more than 6 hrs even as an adult and 3 hrs as a puppy.
Do you have a friend or neighbour who either does not work (retired for example) or who works from home and would be willing to let the dog out to the toilet, top up it's water etc around the middle of the day?

I have a staffie x lab which we got from the pound, she is left alone while we are at work. She is 8 months old (we have had her for 1 month) She is great, she has never had an accident in the house, she has not chewed anything "yet" She is short haired (sheds a little but not heaps) and she is fantastic. We have a fenced off yard (very high fence as lots of dogs can jump) and we have fitted a dog door. She can come in and out as she pleases. She has lots of toys inside and out and we even leave the tv/radio on for her for stimulation, If you are prepared to spend a little money (and it doesnt cost that much for a doggie door) and make sure your garden area is very secure then there is no reason you cant have a dog.
Good luck and enjoy!!

I think you and your partner should think again about getting a dog if you are both out all day because a dog need some one with them some of the time even if it is only the to let them out to go to the loo,and if you have a puppy how will you find time to train it and walk it and do all the thing it will need to learn to be a well trained dog.It is not easy even when you are home all day to do all the things puppies need to do they take a lot of time to train, but well worth it in the end.I just think it might be to hard after a hard day at work to come home to a lot of trouble and have to start cleaning up after you have left you dog all day, even if you get an adult dog you don't know if it will be alright all day..Good luck if you do, just think twice before you get a puppy or dog.Because a dog is for life not for Christmas.

It's fine to have a dog home all day while you work if it's normal hours. Any adult dog should and will wait to go to the bathroom for the time you are gone. It is good that you are checking for breeds that do well being alone, some of that is breed, and some of it is just the dog.
Check out www.dogbreedinfo.com and do the breed quiz, it will give you a list of possibles that will fit your life and you can read up on the temperaments and size to make your decision.
Good luck finding the right dog for your life. My family has had everything from poodle/terrier cross dogs to German Shepard and labs that stay home while we work and they do just fine.

Like you I am also looking for a dog. The difference is that I am at home all day. Dogs get bored and then get destructive, start chewing things. The type of breed is irrelevant.
If you must have a dog, get two dogs. They will be company for each other and less likely to be destructive, although they may decide to have a tug-of -war with the cushions. Leave a radio on, this settles them.
The only breed that I can think of that can be left with minimum fuss is a greyhound. As long as they have a basket and food they are happy.

You need to think hard a long about how long the dog is going to be left in the house. Will someone be able to go round to loose him/her out midday. I had mongrels when i grew up they have a good temperament, good nature and come in all different shames and sizes. We have a jack Russell cross now who is left on his own a lot and he pretty much just lies down and goes to sleep. I not sure if that a terrior trait but you can look into some terrior breeds they arent all tiny.

Dogs shed, fact of life> I have a short haired dog and a longer haired dog! It depends if you want little"pins" of hair instead of clumps! And dogs really love attention so be sure you have time to devote to one! If you do get a dog, do you know anyone who could go over during the day and let it out for you? Maybe a kid in the neighbothood before and after school, and during vacations? As for breed, I love my pit mix!

Look into someone in your area that will walk the dog throught the day for you, they usually arn't too expensive, (we paid about a fiver an hour), we always had two dogs, they keep each other company when you are out. We had Bull Mastiffs, they are calm loving dogs with a good nature but probably a bit bigger than you are wanting, how about a labrador?
