Very hot,Rome is lovely,we went last May,its also not a large city like you would imagine.
Theres lots to do and see,what I will say though is watch your belongings,we were robbed within 2 hours of arriving,we were warned before we went so we should have been more careful.
That could happen in any big city though and didnt spoil it too much for us.

very hot, but nice and cool at night. don't get too comfy with shorts and sleeveless shirts... you need them to enter churches
