if you got a 'baby' puppy-approx 8 weeks old-there should be no problem with introductions and friendships forming-an older dog could be a total 'cat-hater' and never settle or it could take a few 'supervised' visits over a few days for them to get along. my own experience is that my girls took three days of introductions (both girls introduced to the cat seperately for a few minutes at a time-over the course of three days) before they stopped wanting to 'eat' the kitty and would tolerate him walking around, the dog however was intent on causing severe bodily harm to poor kitty and he had to be physically restrained on a lead for at least a week before he was comfortable in letting the cat in 'his domain' eventually they all got along well enough to sleep in a pile together! although my dog would be always ready to put kitty in his place if he ever stepped out of line so i could never trust my dog 100% as i feel sure he would have killed him if given the chance-the girls however just ignored kitty really and didnt bother with him!

If you got a puppy they would be fine.

By the time your boyfriend moves in with you in a few months your cat will be nearly full grown and quite capable of holding her own with an 8 week old puppy.

Supervise them together at first but most puppies learn to treat cats nicely.Be prepared for the puppy to have to learn the hard way though i.e. by annoying the cat and getting it's nose scratched.

It would be harder if you got an adult rescue staffie as you would have no way of knowing whether it had been socialised with cats or not so definitely go for a puppy.

It depends how you train the dog. If you get it young enough then it will learn to be friends with the cat (if the cat is willing! which it may not be). Dont allow them to be left alone together until you are sure that the dog wont go for the cat. Just in case, have an area that the cat will be able to get to or hide if necessary and if you think that there is a risk of the dog attacking the cat then you will have to keep them seperate at all times.
Just for the record, staffys are no more likely to attack other animals than any other dog unless they have been trained to do so. Good luck with this.

I have 3 Staffies and they all hate cats but would never hurt one if i was there.
We have 2 cats that run the stable yard and if the dogs see them while i am ou tthey never bother them and try and ignore the cat, but i ma sure if i wasn't there they would try and catch the cats.
My friend also has a staffie, out of our litter and hers lives with 4 cats with no probs.
Just depends how you introduce them and let tehm get to know each other.

my staff x cross is fine with all my cats but will chase if given opportunity the cats dont mind and playfight but they are all used to having dogs around. i would say get a puppy although it is likely to be a handful the dog and cat can grow up together hopefully in harmony otherwise get a dog from a shelter that does proper cat checks with there dogs an adult dog that has not lived with cats could be a disaster unless you are very experienced.

If you introduce your cat to a puppy it wont like it, but i did it with a 15yr old cat and after a while they just ignored each other.
You will have to make sure the puppy is well trained and taught not to chase things, even outdoors because they can find it hard to differentiate between the two activities!

O.K. so in the previous answers I have called my dog a pitmix. Just so there is no confusion( I know what my dog is) . He is technically an American Staffordshire, Rotti x and we had a cat and they got along just fine(until the cat got out, and we lost him). But my dog does not like cats that are running loose outside!(like the neighborhood cats).

Staffies have a high prey drive. You never really know. I think that if you got a puppy and intoduced them right away, they would probably be ok. I have a Staffie and a pet bunny (inside pets) and they get a long great, but she would eat a cat in a second, and also HAS eaten wild rabbits outside. Tricky situation, but you wont know until you try. Dont leave them unattended together until you are absolutely sure....

Each dog and cat is different. Give it a supervised trial run before committing to the puppy purchase.
