It can be a proper noun, example
I work in Caltex or
I work in British Oil.
If you want to use a common noun, the sentence will look like:
I work in a hospital or
I work in a school

As shown by Caicos and Turk, it is usually nouns and verbs that follow, e.g banking and teaching can be used as nouns and often are but strictly speaking they are verbs, e.g I am teaching today or, I need to do my banking today. A proper noun can be used though, as he/she said, e.g London, NYC, Manchester etc... I work in ... finance, a cinema, a shop, a brothel etc...

In this context the word "in" could be followed either by the place of work:
"I work in a hospital", "I work in London", "I work in a large office"
or: by the field in which you work:
"I work in insurance", "I work in banking", "I work in investment".
In the first case the word "at" is more common when referring to the place of work: "I work at a bank", "I work at the butcher's shop" - ("I work in the butcher's shop" would probably indicate that the butcher's shop is where you do your work, but not as a butcher) - and is used almost exclusively if the place of work is referred to by the Company name or a proper noun: "I work at Woolworths", "I work at the Ministry of Education".
When naming the town or city where, you work, however, "in" is the norm: "I work in London", "I work in France". Note also:
I work in town/I work in the city/I work in the country, where "at" is never used.
