Prayer is a chance for a Muslim to express to his Lord whatever he feels and needs through Divine Words of Allah i.e. the Qur'an.
One may pray individually or communally, at home, outside, virtually any clean place, as well as in a mosque, though the latter is preferred
To remember his Lord and not forget His commands amid life's pre-occupations.

I feel the closest to the creator when I am outside in the woods or enjoying nature , anywhere you feel comfortable, you don't need four walls and someone telling you how or what to pray for.

It depends on how strong is you're belief..
if u truly believe in God , you'll feel always close to Him.
but in general you feel closest to Him when you're in really BIG trouble.
Imagine yourself in the middle of the sea, and you're sinking, and no one is there to help you, even if you're atheist for example, at that moment you'll know and believe in "GOD"
and you'll know that He exists

You can feel close to any imagination anywhere. Day dreaming is fine but don't take your imagination back in to the real world.
