"What proof you have that God exists?"
"Nothing, alright."

"What proof you have that God doesn't exist?"
"Nothing, alright."

Theists, conviction to God doesn't work like fire insurance, you can't say anything about pascal's wager because the wager itself is insincere to God.

Atheists, faith isn't delusional, faith is real. Like having faith in your loved ones, faith in your friends, faith in your car that it will get you in time. Faith in God is just...another type of faith.

You guys always talk about pot calling kettle black. Bible says atheists are fools, atheists say theists are delusional. Can we stop with this name calling and get along?

Anyways, Theists should respect atheists decision to not believe in God, and Atheists should respect theists decision to follow God.

Let's try to respect each other, shall we?

Can I get an Amen?

I hope you do. My point is, to the believers who say God exists, athiests point to a little flaw in this theory. They say, if everything is created by God, who created God? My answer to them is this:
If God did not create humans, then who or what did? chance? evolution? some other superior being not amounting to God? Aliens? A mad scientist?
Well, lets look at it from another view-point. Who created this computer, this internet, this chair, this table etc. Man. Well who created man? The most probable answer that an athiest can give is that man created himself through any of the above processes without any help from any other species. If they can accept this logic for man, then why not for God? Why cannot the all-powerful God be able to create & sustain himself without any external help? I need a good explanation from any athiest !!

First of all I'd like to say that I've nothing against either theists or atheists.
Every person has right to embrace any religion or belief he/she desires. Be it Jesus, Virgin Mary, Buddha or tooth fairy.
Atheists do not believe in the existence of God because there's no empirical scientific proofs. Perfectly understandable.
Having belief or faith in something/ someone is good, but having blind faith or zeal is another.
In my opinion, being atheist is better because one does not have to quarrel with another on whose god is the best. Just look at Middle East conflicts. They have been fighting bloody wars and sacrificing many innocent lives over a piece of land to justify each other's belief. Using common sense, that's overly stupid.

You say that as though the two are equivalent, as though believers claim to believe on the basis of faith, and as though proof is the correct standard.

I DO already respect the believer who really does base his belief on faith. I think he's wrong, but at least he's honest.
But that's a small minority here - most of the believers claim to have evidence or even proof (of course - that's the only way they can support their name-calling). That's simply lying, and I don't respect people who lie over and over again to defend their false religious beliefs.

In addition, if neither side has any evidence, the logical conclusion is not that we don't know whether or not God exists, but rather than he does not. Burden of evidence.

Finally, "proof" is not a good standard for belief. There's danged little that we can prove - essentially none of the empirical facts about the universe around us. Proof is unimportant - evidence is what matters.

We are sorta in the same boat. Atheists take a theory for a fact--calling it Sound Scientific Theory. It is still a theory not a Law because it cannot be Disproved. Religious persons claim the same. They believe in a theory that cannot be disproved either. Both sides have good arguments but in the end we can be sure of nothing. All that we can be sure of is that we have Faith to sustain our beliefs.
I say Amen Brother

I do agree with your premise. I try to be respectful, though sometimes I do like being a smart aleck. One of the reasons I hang out here it to show people that atheists are not devils in disguise, but thinking people who are compassionate, warm, funny and incredibly hot. (Ok, I could leave that last part out I guess)

I think were it gets difficult is when people act like total knuckleheads saying things like "God said it so there is no reason to discuss it further" as in evolution. I also find myself reacting when I see people slam gays with statements that are totally false and hateful. By the way, I am straight so its not personal.

I do think people with religious faith have done some incredible things. I understand how faith can help people get through life. I will not call people names for having faith, but I do want to be able to point out hatred.

I think it would be impossible for a true theist to respect an Atheist's stance because God commands in the bible to bear witness to him. So a Christian is always going to attempt to convert people, they would be letting themselves and God down if they didn't. You can't have a devout Christian without having someone that is going to attempt to convert a non-believer - and that is damn annoying! Just because that is what they believe to be the right thing to do does not necessarily earn my respect! A belief in any God is fine but unfortunately a theists belief isn't exactly personal and private. Just because a Christian believes that they are supposed to spread the word of God doesn't make it socially acceptable.

You will not get an amen from me since I am atheist, but anyway you have a point. Of course your faith is real, only god is unreal :) In the same sense that I have faith that my car will carry me today again (but I do follow certain precautions in case it doesn't).

Respect is the word.

I will give you an Amen. :) I am Christian, and I just resign to not take it so darn seriously. It's MY personal relationship with God that's important, and no amout of pushing religion onto me, or telling me God doesn't exist is going to sway me either way. Either it's in your heart to believe or it isn't. I just don't believe that God is this hate monger that will cast you to the depths of hell for being wrong about his existence. I don't mind if someone wants to pray for me, because I believe differently or not enough for them, and I don't mind if someone thinks I'm silly for believing at all, but I agree with you, it would be wonderful if we could all debate respectfully. :) There's nothing wrong with sharing differences, but I don't relate to the need for hostility. :)

"Atheists, faith isn't delusional, faith is real. Like having faith in your loved ones, faith in your friends, faith in your car that it will get you in time. Faith in God is just...another type of faith."

We don't make the claim that faith is the delusion. We make the claim that the focus of the faith - God and religion - is the delusion.

Love, faith in loved ones, faith in your car working properly - all things we have faith in based on repeated evidence of those things being worthy of faith.

God is indeed another type of faith. One with no evidence.

Other than that, I respect people. I do not respect most of the aspects of their religions.

Ok, since there's no Direct Evidence to disprove any religion, I think I'll go make up my own where we worship a giant bottle of shampoo that created the heavens and the earth. It would be legitimate, since there's no direct evidence to disprove it right Adrek?
Come now, you're smarter than this.
