I would not feel obligated but would try to help when and if the opportunity rose to do so.
Sometimes people are just nice, and don't expect anything in return. You should feel happy that someone you work with cares enough about you to do you a favour.
Karma will take care of everything.

I will not say obligated but i certainly will remember the favor and will want to be nice to that person. This reminds me of an incident where i was promoted to a new position and the person who i took over from gave up her lunch hour for at least three weeks to show me the ropes of this new job. I think that was such an unselfish gesture that i never forgot and coincidentally, this same person came back to the department and i was able to assist her in an even more complicated situation. I really felt great to be able to return the favor.

Not only someone you work with but anyone who did you a favour deserves a good returns however if they say not to worry then just wait for the right time to do it. It will come a time you will be able to help them. As it is a work colleague, one of you might leave the job then if that is the case take the person out for a drink or something or give a nice gift because u may never see them again

Sure, if you like. You could keep the favor in mind, and if the situation arises, do a favor back. Or, buy a small gift, if you want. I had a co-worker do me a favor, and I bought her a giant size candy bar, her favorite kind, and worked 4 hours for her, because she had worked four hours for me. I have since repayed the favor many times over, and I feel good about that. I do not consider the extra favors to be "in the bank" for my asking future favors, because I know she will do me a favor if I asked her, and she for me.

That of course depends entirely on the individual. .. Some people are just takers and either expect people to do them favours or just don't give a damn about returning it. If someone says they don't expect anything in return then don't try to force the issue but if the occasion arises where you can return the favour, do so out of gratitude and expect nothing in return save for the person's thanks. Don't go doing favours for people if you expect them to return the "favour" because then it is not a favour but a debt.

I would out of a personal conscience and a feeling of gratitude, even though when I do someone a favor and tell them not to worry about it I do not expect anything in return.

I think that you would feel a debt of gratitude and look forward to helping them when opportunity arose. But it would be good to feel that you would have helped them anyway!

We often make the mistake of assuming other people to be less kind than we are. Wouldn't you have done the same for that person had your positions been reversed?

I would feel highly obliged and obviously I would do anything from my end if he needs my favor in the future.

It would depend on how big the favor was. You might pay for their coffee if your out together or send a plate of cookies to their home.

Depending on what it is, I would probably just make sure that I can do the same in return should the opportunity present itself.
