People with Down syndrome have feelings like anyone else. You are perpetuating a stereotype that is just plain wrong. If you don't want to "play" with someone with Down syndrome, simply tell them that you are doing something else at the moment and kindly suggest something else they might do. You don't have to be cruel and you don't have to hurt their feelings. If you aren't comfortable telling them this, or you don't think you can do it without being hurtful, speak to a teacher and ask them to help redirect the other child into another activity.

But you know...it wouldn't hurt you to be nice and include a person with Down syndrome in some of your "play". You have no idea what an opportunity you are missing. People with Down syndrome are wonderful, hardworking people who need socialization just like anyone else.

Down syndrome in people is misunderstood. The stigma attached is such as your statement: "it's not like they'll feel hurt..." My son has Downs and his feelings can be hurt, he is very senstive to emotions. There is a degree to their mentally challenged state and are quite capable of living a fairly independant life. My son attends school, works during the summer and is involved in many sports and happens to be a multi-gold medal winner in the Special Olympics. He can read and write, loves basketball, and can out-play anyone on a video game. Chris Burke is an actor with Down Syndrome. You may remember him from "Life Goes On". Chris has his own band and travels the country doing performances. Happy> Yes he is, and smart too!

There are different levels of severity when it comes to Downs Syndrome...and they have feelings of hurt, just like you. Too often, people take for granted that those with Downs are just dumb and don't think for themselves. There are some that are severly "retarded", both mentally and physically, but know this, there are some with the same facial features of Downs Syndrome that are college graduates. Try to be gentle and tactful with the one you mentioned......they might save your life one day.

Do You have feelings? are you a member of society? are you human? are you an ignorant teenager? do you have your head up your ****, or just a dumb***?
did any of these questions offend you? if a few did..wooohooo...you have feelings just like people with down syndrome...wake up and grow up little boy! though I have to admit....there must be "some" good in you if a person with down syndrome wants to get to know you, they are usually pretty good judges of character. but if you truly feel you don't want to get to know a kid with DS (which is your loss) then just tell them you don't want to play and leave it at that.

i would just expalin to them like a child that you dont want to play with them right now and suggest an activity for them to play. you are right they are usually happy people but they still are people and feel rejection on some level! treat them as you would want to be treated.

The same way I'd tell a black kid I didn't wanna play with it..

quote: "It's not like they'll feel hurt, they're always happy"..

(See the irony in your above statement? & by the way, I corrected the spelling for you, ********!..)

(Why all the thumb's down people, when I'm supporting the Down's syndrome kid?..)

Why you don't want to play with them? Is it because you want to play with "healthy " kids or what? If that's the case then I feel sorry for you.

Just tell him you don't want to play with someone who can spell better than you. He'll understand.
