Actually there are a number of preservative free dog foods you can buy. Mostly from online pet supply places but I have also seen it in freezer sections in some stores.

Some dogs have an allergic reaction to the dyes and preservatives in commercial foods and it can cause everything from skin problems to vomiting and cancers.

Such pet foods as sold as natural, holistic, or preservative free pet food or some similar name. You have to read the ingredients close.

The same holds true for cat food.

Even though more expensive than other brands much of the time, the savings in trips to the vet alone can make it actually cheaper to use these foods if you have a pet that is sensitive to dye or preservatives.

most common dog foods have some type of preservatives, there are some specialty brands which are more natural then others. For the best information on what type of food to feed talk to your veterinarian. for more information on any specific brand you may need to contact the manufacturer to get help with this question, as any food will spoil with out preservatives of some kind, most pet foods which are developed to sit on a shelf for some period of time, with out spoiling, have preservatives.

All commmercial dog foods have preservatives...but the high quality foods contain natural preservatives like vitamin E.

It is the chemical preservatives that have been shown to increase risk of a number of illnesses that you have to be careful of. those tend to be BHA/BHT and Ethoxyquin. Companies like Science Diet, Purina, Pedigree still uses these horrible preservatives.

If you feed your dog a raw or home cooked diet versus as commerical kibble/can diet, you are much more likely to be able to stay away from preservatives.

Hope this helps.

Pretty much.

I only buy plain, colourless dry biscuits for my dog. That way I know that they will at least have less colours and preservatives than the one's that come in red and green shaped like little bones and stuff!

Unless you pick it from your own personal garden, tended by your own fair hand and cook and prepare it your self, then YES.

presevatives are in EVERYTHING - I have seen a 15 year old Cheeseburger and it looks as good as one made yesterday.

maybe mashed up cheesburgers are a component in oil of Olay products "to delay the signs of aging . . ."
