I am about to but buy some DVD from the stores to learn yoga as I heard that Hatha yoga is suitable for beginners. But it seems that hatha falls into the category of ashtanga yoga. So should i practice hatha yoga, ashtanga, or any other yoga?

I would try Kapishi yoga for beginners. Astral Yoga is also good but made me a little dizzy. Deschingus yoga is very tough at the beginning but great for intestinal problems
Gathagarba is a modern sect which I haven't tried but I hear is good if you like pain. Personally Coginaskank yoga is my favourite but you have to be careful on choosing the right partner, otherwise it can lead to many problems.

Many of the categories of yoga are very similar to other forms of yoga since basically all yoga forms derive most of their philosophy from the yoga first founded 4000 to 5000 years ago.

Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic yogic path, including moral disciplines, physical exercises (asanas and postures) and Pranayama (breath control), and meditation. The Hatha yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas (postures) and exercise.

Hatha Yoga is one of the two branches of Yoga that focus on the physical culture, the other one being Raja Yoga. Hatha Yoga seems to focus mainly on Dhyana (meditation) and Asana. Ashtanga Yoga seems to focus on the larger picture of yoga and includes the other eight limbs of yoga as set forth by Patanjali some of which include concentration, control of the breath, abstaining from various things (violence, lying, theft, etc), observing certain things(purity, self, contentment, etc), super-conscious state, and eventually Moksha or release.

Personally I will agree with you that Hatha Yoga is suitable for beginners. I think that Ashtanga Yoga is a bit more aggressive and active and focuses a lot on vinyasa or putting things together...specifically asanas, but that's just my personal opinion. The more serious you get about yoga being a complete lifestyle change and not just exercise, the more you will want to delve into the other areas in yoga practice. Both Hatha and Ashtanga are suitable for beginners if you find the right pace with your breathing.
