I am about to buy a new PC as my 6-year old computer with Windows Me operating system has reached the end of its life. I mainly use my PC for three things: internet, word processing and games (mainly retro). I hardly ever download music or videos. Is there any point in paying extra for a PC with Windows Vista or would Windows XP serve my needs?

Windows Vista is something I considered but, after visiting my computer dealer, I decided not to.

The reason? He told me he operated on Windows XP and that served his needs. The Vista program has more features but not enough to warrant buying it for the application either he or I needed.

Now he, with the knowledge about computers knew more than me, had more to lose by not selling it to me and was telling me the truth. Since then, I have seen numerous comments about glitches in Vista so my considered advice is - forget Vist for the time being.

The very end XP product (sp2) is probably just as good as Vista Basic. Its more than adequate for your pc use. I'm actually very happy with XP, and in no rush to put silly money on an upgrade, just for the sake of there being one available. Stupid how there are 3 types, Basic, Home and Premium. They should have just stuck with the latter two.

However if you are going to buy new, I'd recommend a pc with at least 512mb-1g of ram, and at least 80gb+ of hdd storage. It will probably come with Vista anyway. So either way, you should be happy.

As for Vista itself mind you, there have been problems with upgrades to it, rather than it being the pre installed operating system. And there has been advice to wait at least 3 years before it is brought into line with software clashing issues.

I'm afraid you will not have an opportunity to chose, every PC is going to come with a windows vista copy installed. Once you buy it you should to adapt to it, it is not worth uninstalling Vista and installing XP. And Vista is the future from Microsoft, all new devices (peripherals-software) will be supported by Vista and not by XP in a middle-long term. (like win98 - XP).

i like the Aero characteristic in domicile windows Vista domicile top rate and domicile windows Vista ideal (i've got no longer seen Vista company). Then, there is the in-equipped secure practices of course. domicile windows Defender is a strong anti-spyware, while domicile windows Vista firewall tests the two incoming and outgoing site visitors. nevertheless on the tip of the day, Ubuntu is my own popular. Ubuntu, with Compiz-Fusion, leaves Vista a techniques at the back of in photos. :)

When you get your new computer -

Install UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM) on your old computer.

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Is there any point in having an ashtray on a bicycle, or trainers that squeak? For what you want to do, the 'free' XP that comes with the PC will do.

get vista basic. It futureproofs your PC while not giving all the crap in the higher end versions.
