Make sure that you have a family activity day and do fun activities together. Have sharing time at least 2 times a week where everyone gets to speak their mind or share what they feel is interesting. Try to have dinner at the table. Try to have family that is extended come over for a meal once in a while and always make sure that you tell family you love them.

With my own children, it's open and honest communication. I always tell them they can talk to me about anything. Believe me, they have, and it's very honest, even if it means some yelling, some hurt feeling but at least it's discussed and it's in the open. We also tell each other we love each other everyday, and mean it. We freely give and accept hugs and kisses. It sounds trite but I cherish these everyday. It makes it worth waking up every morning.

It is family and you are a stranger??? How did that happen?? You better start communicating and sharing with them--don't be a stranger. laugh and share in the people and just relax and have fun--be helpful, show them who you are and that should work.Good luck

Love them unconditionally. Always allow them to be open and honest with you. Always be open and honest with them. Teach them right from wrong, but don't get angry with them when they do wrong, just punish them accordingly and don't back down from your punishment regardless of how angry they may get (They will understand when they get older).
