When we hear one of the kids fart, we usually say "who stepped on a frog"? It's not lovely, but it makes them laugh! My 4 year old says that her butt burped.

"Cutting the cheese", "sitting on an air biscuit", "blowing from the floor up", "busting a gut"...those are several phrases that might make lovelier ways to express "passing gas" to children.
