There are plenty of scams but nothing too serious compared to Indonesia or the Philippines, for example.

The biggest single scam in HK is the sale of pirated goods. Many brands of clothing, CDs, DVDs, computer games, jewellery, watches, even electronics like mobile phone batteries, may be sold to you as "genuine" and at genuine (i.e. expensive) prices - but they will be fakes. Only some shops are dishonest though; many other shops will openly sell these items as fakes very cheaply.

Some bars (especially the "girly" bars around the Wan Chai area) will try to scam you on your bill too. In many bars in HK you do not pay for your drinks every time you buy one - they will automatically run a tab and charge you for all your drinks at the end of the evening. Assuming you will be drunk, they sometimes try to slip one or two extra drinks onto the bill. In some bars they will put slips of paper into a plastic tumbler in the middle of the table every time you order drinks - when you call for the bill, be sure to count these slips of paper yourself *before* the bar worker takes them away to tally up.

Other than that, HK is a fairly law-abiding place. Enjoy your holiday!

All of Asia abounds in one type of scam or another. Keep you hand on your wallet. Lock your doors. If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is. Same as anywhere else in the world. Realize that if you are buying fake goods, that the whole thing is a scam. You pay your money and you take your chances. If the handle falls off your 'genuine' gucci purse you bought for $10, then don't be shocked. Use your head, an you will be just fine.

Yes, it's quite notorious! It's no different like other big cities in United States. For example you won't shop for electronic products in Hollywood near the Chinese Theater area, those shops rip off tourists. In New York, you avoid the same stores in Times Square.

Being a tourist is a disadvantage, if you can buy what you can from where you live, do not risk yourself!

Plenty. Specially in shopping. Be very very careful special in buying big ticket items. They show you an item you like. It's cheap so you decide to buy it. You give them money. Then they will tell you the item you like is not available and they start selling you other models. You tell them you'd settle for the demo unit they showed you. They will say it's not for sale or defective. They push you with other items. It will take hell to get your money back.
