Wikipedia says hirsutism is often a symptom rather than a disease in itself. Hirsutism can be caused by hormone problems, ovarian problems, tumors, drug induced, less common causes or be familial in nature.

Do you have familial hirsutism ? which is a different situation than disease induced hirsutism.

Familial hirsutism is not associated with androgen excess.
Familial hirsutism is both typical and natural in certain populations, such as some women of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern ancestry.

If you have this heritage and relatives on both sides of your family all display excess hair then this would certainly increase the chances.

There is no mention in the medical articles on the subject. But the doctor may ask questions such as "Do other members of your family also have excessive amounts of hair?"
Hirsutism is a symptom rather than a disease and may be a sign of a more serious medical indication, especially if it develops well after puberty.
Please see the web pages for more details on Hirsutism.

No. My husband and father in law are quite hairy. My daughter has alot of hair, for a girl, but --so far, neither of my boys seem to have gotten it. Only time will tell as none of my children have hit puberty.

My sister in law is not a hairy person.
