What type of infrared to measure distance?

I need an infrared that can be used to measure distance.Can anybody tell what type of infrared suitable to use?The specific infrared, the name, wavelength can be covered and the frequency used to operate by that infrared?

Infrared is used to measure temperature. Laser is used to measure distance (or velocity).
