One of the main reasons, while starting a computer executable files get loaded.
Ex: If u have Yahoomessenger and if the setting is allowed to execute while windows start up then it takes a lot of RAM and will slow down the computer.

And if u have lots of softwares they also take a lot of time to start because while starting all the related exe files will get loaded.
So removing unwanted softwares will speed up ur computer.
May be checking and cleaning the viruses/spywares/freewares will help you. Since they also slow down the computer.
Better becarfull when u visit unsecured websites or set your firewalls correctly to overcome spywares and other unwanted automatically downloading softwares.

Defragmenting the disk will only contribute in a very very minor level in increasing the speed up. So defragmenting is not a major thing to concentrate.

some actually say that by disabling the windows XP splash screen, it would start faster. i, however, am not too sure about it as it seems to be the same for me. so let's not delve into that but rather onto when XP is loaded and waiting for you password should you have any.

1) goto Start>Run

2) type msconfig

3) goto tab startup

4) okay, for the techno wizzies, they will know what to disable and what not to disable. but for the average user, just click the button disable all. i will explain later why i say so.

5) click ok and when the computer asks to restart the com, click yes.

6) the next time it boots up, there will be a message prompt saying that you have selected to manually configure your startup options blah blah blah. just check the box that says don't tell me anymore, and click ok.

now, i will explain step 4. it is nothing special. but when you disable everything, the REAL IMPORTANT parts of your computer, such as your antivirus, will still know how to kick back on and run by itself whenever your computer boots up. it is within the system registry that whenever your antivirus is down at startup, it will enable first of all above all else. and then, it will examine further if it was caused by the USER (you) to manually shut down by selecting to turn off the antivirus through its control panel. but in this case of using msconfig, it does not show as you manually shutting the antivirus off, so it remains active until you decide to turn off your antivirus manually one day.

Get your RAM up to 2 GB. Then record the booting sequence on a camera. Then buy a Mac, load the movie, edit it and play it at twice the speed, after having crashed and burned your PC to dust.
