it depends on what you are specifically looking for. are you looking for a DSLR, a PnS (Point And Shoot), or a model series?
if you are looking for a DSLR, i suggest that you go to Canon or Nikon. They are better at making DSLRs and they have a wider range of lenses, even applicable to third party such as Sigma. the CCDs that Nikon and Canon produce are much better and have finer settings than that of a Sony.
What Sony lacks in performance, it makes up in design. they use Carl Zeiss lenses, one of the top three lens makers in the world. and others have begun to use lenses from Leica, Zeiss biggest competitor. the lenses may be important, but without a good CCD to get the amount of color saturation etc, the picture will not turn out good. a good picture consists of angle, light, form and a whole lot of stuff. a good CCD and a good lens will net you a better picture in the long run.
Sony also has its T model form series, but those are without a optical viewfinder and are utterly worthless in bring snowy conditions as the light will reflect onto the LCD and thus you will not be able to see a thing before and after you shoot the picture. until you can stand in the shade, the pictures you have taken will be like doing guesswork and wondering how your pictures will turn out.
if you are an aspiring photographer, go for a camera made by Canon or Nikon. If you just want to have fun, then i recommend a camera from Sony (expensive), Canon, Panasonic (with stabilisers inbuilt into them to reduce vibrations when shooting a picture).

I have had a P92 and now have the H5. they are both point and shoot, but The H5 is a 7 mega pixel and takes phenomenal pictures. I only have one problem with it....It has so many features that it is taking me quite some time to get the hang of all the settings. Between Low light, bright light, twilight, macro, distant, fast moving pictures to portraits, it takes them all. But setting it for each one can be a bit overwhelming if you don't have the patience to take wonderful shots.
For a novice, check out a 5 mega pixel point and shoot they take nice pictures and don't require a degree in photography and can be purchased at a real reasonable price. I loved my P92 and for under $100 on EBay you can buy the camera and a 1 GB memory card to take well over 1000 pictures.

Without a doubt, the dSLR, the Sony Alpha D-100, is their best camera.

Next down, I'd say, is the Sony DSC-H5 and next down is the DSC-W100. Others might know the Sony line better than I do and correct me on the smaller cameras, but none of them will be as good as the dSLR.
