You have received several good answers. So I give additional information only. The surname Patel - belonging to one community, by birth. This community originally belong to farmers families. But due to growth in education many Patels became industrialists, educationalists, migrated to various countries, computer experts, politisians etc. Patels are well known as helping nature people, good friends.
Similar surnames in other states are Yadav in Bihar, Jat in Haryana, Patil in Maharashtra, Gurjar in Uttar Pradesh.
Though all people with this surname can not be trusted as good friends because the malafied effect of new era is already spread at all levels.
The percentage of intercast marraige in this community is less than 5 %. There are major two sub casts of Patels - Leua and Kadwa, but within them there are large numbers of sub - sub castes, mostly depending upon little areas of their original locations.
